原句：There was a very interesting remark in a book by an Englishman that I read recently giving what he thought was a reason for this American characteristic.
如果是我写,我会写成There was a very interesting remark that I read recently in a book by an Englishman……
请问两个句子有什么区别吗?
在我的观念的,定语从句应该是紧跟在先行词的后面的（这里不考虑非限制性定语从句）.第一句的that那样放没问题吗?

有区别的
第一句的意思 是remark是by EM,但你第二句有歧义了,不知道是book by EM还是remark by EM.
这样子说吧
第一句呢 in a book 是短语作为后置定语修饰前面的remark 所以不存在歧义的问题
但是到第二个句子里面that I read recently in a book,从句来做定语修饰的话,那in the book这里就有问题了,读起来不知道后面的by an Englishman是修饰remark还是book了
