1 Community service is animportant component ofeducation here at our university.We encourage all students tovolunteer for at least onecommunity activity before theygraduate. A new communityprogram called "One On One"helps elementary studentswho've fallen behind. Youeducation majors might beespecially interested in it becauseit offers the opportunity to dosome teaching—that is, tutoringin math and English. You'd haveto volunteer two hours a weekfor one semester. You can chooseto help a child with math, English,or both. Half-hour lessons arefine, so you could do a half hourof each subject two days a week.Professor Dodge will act as amentor to the tutors---he'll beavailable to help you with lessonplans or to offer suggestions foractivities. He has office hoursevery Tuesday and Thursdayafternoon. You can sign up forthe program with him and beginthe tutoring next week. I'm sureyou'll enjoy this communityservice and you'll gain valuable
